I’ve Lost the Key! How to Open a Locked Safe

A forgotten combination or lost key doesn’t have to keep you from accessing your valuables. Some people resort to ruining their locked safe when there are other options they can try to open it first. This leaves them with the cost of buying an entirely new safe.

In this article, we discuss what you can do about an inaccessible safe lock box, when to call a locksmith, and more. Continue reading if you want to learn how to access your valuables while keeping your safe functioning correctly.

Check the Instructions

If you are dealing with a locked safe, the best place to start is in the instruction manual. This can help you come up with other ways to open your locked safe.

For example, say you have a safe that locks with a code. If you forget the code, you may think you’re out of luck. However, your manual might remind you of a hidden plate with a keyhole that might be easier to open.

It’s also worth checking the manual for other troubleshooting suggestions. However, worst-case scenario, it will have the number for you to contact the manufacturer of the safe lock box if you need additional ideas or information.

Try Different Tools

If the instruction manual isn’t helping you open a safe, then you can try using different tools. If you have two paperclips, try to open your locked safe by inserting one end of one paperclip straight into the top portion of the keyhole. Take the second paperclip, insert it into the inner part of the lock, and turn both clips until the lock opens.

You can also try this with a screwdriver or a knife. To do this, insert the tip of the instrument into the lock and rotate it until the locked safe opens.

Call a Locksmith

Before jumping to our last suggestion, which will make your fire-safe lock box unusable, we recommend reaching out to a professional locksmith to help. Be prepared with the brand and model number if possible so they can bring the right tools.

The best-case scenario is that you are dealing with an open safe. Your locksmith can help you with resetting the safe, which will save you time and save your safe. See more here about how a locksmith can help you with your safe lockbox.

Drill Through the Safe

If all else fails, you have the option to drill through your safe to open it. As we said, your safe won’t be salvageable if you have to resort to drilling, but it can give you access to whatever you need inside instead of keeping it in safe lock storage.

The best way to do this is to drill a hole large enough for your finger to reach through. You’ll be able to use your finger to open the lock from the inside of the locked safe.

Find a Way Into Your Locked Safe

Don’t let a forgotten combination or lost key keep you from your most precious belongings. If you end up with a locked safe that you can’t get into, remember to review the instruction manual and try alternative tools. If all else fails, we recommend seeking out a professional locksmith to help you open a safe.
